Closer By Committee

The idea of a closer by committee for the Minnesota Twins makes me throw up in my mouth a little (Twins to go with closer-by-committee). Ron Gardenhire might as well just flash a sign to the rest of the American League that the Twins don't have anyone that is ready to take on this role (see picture above). For a team that has been favored to win the division during this pre-season, this is a huge step backwards. This approach hardly ever works, so the thought of it working for the Twins is hard to fathom.

The Twins had plenty of options to choose from for this role. Matt Guerrier said that he would relish closing games (Twins' Guerrier keeps his cool, ready if Joe Nathan can't close). Eric Karabell thinks Jon Rauch should be able to replace Nathan and save 30 games while he is at it (Rauch can ably replace Nathan and save 30 games). The sexy choice in all of this closer mess has been Francisco Liriano. But his winter and Spring Training have made him the leading candidate for the final starter spot in the Twins' rotation (Liriano has edge for fifth starter spot).

The Twins have multiple other candidates in the organization to fill the closer role. Twins fans are going to push for Gardenhire to chose a closer and chose him quickly. Otherwise there could be a mess at Target Field in the 9th inning.
