The anatomy of Kyle Gibson's near no-hitter

Gibson in fine form (Democrat and Chronicle)
The Rochester Red Wings were scheduled to play a double header against the Buffalo Bisons today. The game scheduled for yesterday between these two teams got postponed due to the bad weather in the Northeast. That means the teams were only scheduled to have two seven inning games in order to fill-in for the game that was lost yesterday.

Kyle Gibson, the star pitching prospect, was scheduled to pitch in the first game of the doubleheader. Gibson pitched outstanding and had a no-hitter in place when he took the mound for the seventh inning.

Here is the break-down of each inning that Gibson pitched in this brilliant outing.

Bottom of the 1st inning:
Jason Pridie reached on a throwing error by Trevor Plouffe (E4)
Kirk Nieuwenhuis grounded out, Gibson tossed to Bailey covering at first. Pridie to 2nd. (1 out)
During the next at-bat Gibson picked off Pridie at 2nd. (2 out)
Zach Lutz grounds out on a 6-3 play from Toby Gardenhire to Bailey (3 out)
Inning Total: 9 pitches (7 strikes, 2 balls)

Bottom of the 2nd inning:
Lucas Duda swinging K (1 out)
Ronny Paulino flew out to Ben Revere in left field (2 out)
Russ Adams swinging K (3 out)
Inning Total: 19 pitches (12 strikes, 7 balls), 2 K

Bottom of the 3rd inning:
Nick Evans grounded out 1-3, Gibson to Bailey (1 out)
Luis Hernandez grounded out 4-3, Plouffe to Bailey (2 out)
Ruben Tejada reached on an error by Gardenhire (E6)
Wild pitch from Gibson allows Tejada to reach third
Pridie grounded out 4-3, Plouffe to Bailey (3 out)
Inning Total: 16 pitches (11 strikes, 5 balls), 1 wild pitch

Bottom of the 4th inning:
Nieuwenhuis grounded out 4-3, Plouffe to Bailey (1 out)
Lutz struck-out looking (2 out)
Duda flew out to center-fielder Brandon Roberts (3 out)
Inning Total: 9 pitches (6 strikes, 3 balls), 1 K

Bottom of the 5th inning:
Paulino swinging K (1 out)
Adams swinging K (2 out)
Evans grounded out 4-3, Plouffe to Bailey (3 out)
Inning Total: 14 pitches (10 strikes, 4 balls), 2 K

Bottom of the 6th inning:
Hernandez grounds out to Bailey at first (1 out)
Tejada grounded out 6-3, Gardenhire to Bailey (2 out)
Pridie struck-out looking (3 out)
Inning Total: 11 pitches (8 strikes, 3 balls), 1 K

Bottom of the 7th inning:
Nieuwenhuis homers on 3-1 pitch from Gibson.
Gibson pulled from the game.
Inning Total: 5 pitches (2 strikes, 3 balls), 1 H, 1 HR

The Red Wings would go on to lose the game in 10 innings but it still doesn't take away from the great effort from their star pitching prospect. Gibson is still on a pitch count at this early point in the season so it would have been interesting to see if the Twins would have let him finish the 7th if the no-hitter was still intact.

Here was Gibson's final line on the day:
IP: 6.0
H: 1
ER: 1
K: 6 K (4 swinging, 2 looking)
Total Pitches: 83
