Meet the Twins New Back-Up Catcher: Steve Holm

The injury to Joe Mauer means the Twins will have a new back-up catcher on the roster for Friday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Steve Holm is 31 and has be a career minor league player with 53 games played at the major league level (the latest time was in May 2009).

He joined the Twins this offseason from the Giants organization. He spent all of last season at AAA Fresno and in the first half of the year he split time at catcher with Buster Posey, the eventual NL Rookie of the Year and World Series Star.

He was a 17th round draft pick coming out of college and made the switch from infielder to catcher very early in his career. The early portion of his career he spent bouncing between A and AA. In 2008, he was invited to the Spring Training Camp of the San Francisco Giants. He played well enough that spring to make the Opening Day roster as the back-up catcher. His firsts from that season include:

First Appearance: Pinch-runner, April 4 at Milwaukee
First Hit: Double off of Ben Sheets, April 6 at Milwaukee
First HR: Off of JC Romero, May 11 vs. Philadelphia

The Twins will be looking for more firsts out of Holm as he and Butera will be the only catchers for the Twins until at least the month of May.

In the mean time, enjoy some more information about Mr. Holm.

Check your facts. Buster Posey (2010 NL ROY) did not spend all of 2010 in AAA Fresno, but you probably know. With that said, I like Steve Holm - he is from my neck of the woods and I hope he gets a shot with the Twins instead of that guy who can't seem to break the Mendoza line... Drew Butera. Just hope the Twinks don't get desperate and sign another SF castoff in Bengie Molina.

Yeah, I was saying that Holm spent all of last season at AAA, not Posey.
