Simple Opening Day Traditions

The Twins will finally begin their regular season schedule tonight in Toronto. After the long winter, I am sure that everyone is ready for the signs of spring to start popping up. There were some exciting games yesterday across baseball with the Reds having a walk-off win against the Brewers and a great pitching duel between Tim Lincecum and Clayton Kershaw.

The Twins had some Opening Day news that was released yesterday even thought it wasn't much of a surprise. The news that was announced by the Twins was:

1. Justin Morneau will be in the Opening Day line-up against the Blue Jays.

2. Joe Nathan will start the season as the Twins closer.

3. Harmon Killebrew will throw out the 1st pitch at the Twins Home Opener

For me Opening Day means a variety of traditions that have come to signal the beginning of a new year in baseball. As a season ticket holder with the Twins the last six years it has been fun to watch my Opening Day traditions evolve into what they are today.

So here are some of simple traditions that I follow for one of the most wonderful days of the year...

Buy a couple packs of baseball trading cards
I don't consider myself a huge collector of baseball cards and I don't think I was ever in that category. But there is something that brings me back to my childhood, when I open a pack of new cards. There is that hope of getting a player that you want and that is much like the hope of the new season. The anticipation of what is to come is something that continues to bring fans back to the game of baseball.

Home Opener with the Guys
In college, some of my friends and I decided to start a tradition that we try to keep every year. We try to get to the Twins Home Opener every season to kick-off the new year. The blizzard that hit the Twin Cities a few seasons ago ended out consecutive streak but we continue to make the pilgrimage to Opening Day. For last year's Opener we had a news crew out of Fargo follow us and document the Inaugural Game at Target Field. Click here to get linked to the story that was covered by WDAY last Opening Day.

Hot Dog on the Grill
Is there anything better than the first warm hot dog off of the grill after a long winter? Baseball and hot dogs go together perfectly and there is nothing more perfect than the first hot dog of the spring. The first hot dog at the Home Opener is great as well, but there is something about making a hot dog fresh on the grill. Pick your condiments, open your favorite beverage, and enjoy the perfect game of baseball.
Enjoy the first Twins game of the season tonight.

I know I will be enjoying some of my simple traditions...
