Morneau close to returning

The Twins had another rough series over the weekend and it is getting harder and harder to find positives to focus on for the 2011 season. The pitching staff is struggling, the team can not score runs, and the defense is finding it hard to make routine plays. A sweep by the hated White Sox also does not help the outlook for most fans on the rest of the season.

One positive note from the weekend was the news that Justin Morneau seems close to returning to the team. Morneau has been out of action since the beginning of June with a wrist injury combined with surgery on his neck. The team's estimate for his return when the injury occurred was mid-August and it looks as if that estimate will be right on the button.

Morneau has played in three rehab games with the Rochester Red Wings and Sunday was his best game so far at the plate. In the game, he combined to go 3-5 with a double, four RBI, and two runs scored. A great sign that he is getting closer to getting back to his MVP form that has been lacking since the first half of last season.

Ron Gardenhire hopes to have Morneau in uniform as early as the Detroit series that starts next Monday. This would allow Morneau to have somewhere around nine rehab starts before he rejoins the big league squad. There is a possibility that the team could hold out and not bring Morneau back until the team returns home on August 18 to play New York.

With the team looking like they are out of the divisional race, the next few weeks of the season could go a long way to helping Morneau to get re-accustomed to being a MLB hitter. The team has said that coming offseason could be full of changes for Morneau's workout routine but it is important for them to see where he is at in the coming weeks.

A healthy Morneau for an entire season in 2012 would be something that all Twins fans would be happy to see.
