2012 MLB Draft Profile: Kevin Gausman
School: Louisiana State University
Stat Summary: W-L (11-1), 2.72 ERA, 128 SO, 27 BB
Accolades: Baseball America's No. 5 rated player in the 2012 Draft, MLB.com's No. 4 rated Draft prospect
The Rundown: A collegiate sophomore, Gausman was already taken in the sixth round of the draft a couple of seasons ago. He decided to go to college to raise his stock and this move looks to have paid off for the right-handed pitcher. His small frame still leaves room for him to add some more strength but he can still get his fastball up to 94 mph. The rest of his pitches need a little polishing but he is still young enough to spend a couple of seasons developing in the minor leagues. He continues to pitch well in some high pressure situations as he tries to bring a CWS title to LSU.
Twins Impact: Gausman has put together a marvelous spring for the LSU Tigers and he will certainly be taken with the first handful of picks. If Mark Appel is off the board and the Twins want to go with a pitcher that has some upside, Gausman could be the arm the team decides to go with. There have been some struggles with command at different points this year and this doesn't really fit the Twins mold of control pitchers.
The Word on the Street: "A draft eligible sophomore whose fastball and change-up are plus pitches but scouts say his breaking ball (slider and/or curve) must improve."
